In 1852, hungry miners needed red meat. And that’s what Augustus T. Dowd was after, one fine spring day, as he chased a wounded bear up the Stanislaus River. Instead of lunch he found some of the biggest trees he’d ever seen. Using a string, he measured one of the trees. When he got back to town, the string was found to be more than 100 feet long. The story goes that nobody believed Augustus T. Dowd, and nobody would go with him to see the leviathan trees. Later, Dowd told everybody he had shot a huge bear, and when curious folks straggled after him to see the bear, they saw the Big Tree instead. Pointing to the immense trunk and lofty top, Dowd cried out, “Boys, do you now believe my big tree story? This is the large grizzly bear I wanted you to see. Do you still think it’s a yarn?”
