Most of this area lies within the borders of the Modoc National Forest, 1.6 million acres of varied terrain that includes meadows, wetlands, forests, and lava fields. The national forest shelters more than 300 species of wildlife, including pronghorn antelope, wild horses and burros, and bald eagles. The Medicine Lake Shield Volcano, about 10 miles south of Lava Beds National Monument, is one of North America’s most unusual geological features. At about 20 miles in diameter, it is the largest volcano in California. Its gently sloping profile hides the fact that, in mass, it is larger than nearby Mount Shasta. This sprawling area northeast of California Highway 89 contains extensive lava flows, cinder cones, pumice deposits, and lava tubes. Scenic attractions include Lava Beds National Monument, Giant Crater, Tilted Rocks, and Burnt Lava Flows. Campgrounds included in this eTrail are: Lava Beds National Monument, Medicine Lake, Harris Spring, Lava Camp, Howard's Gulch, Cottonwood Flat, Lower Rush Creek, Upper Rush Creek, Ash Creek, Willow Creek, Cave Lake, Plum Valley, Cedar Pass, Stowe Reservoir, Big Sage Reservoir, Reservoir C, Pepperdine, Mill Creek Falls, Soup Spring, Blue Lake, Patterson, Emerson, McArthur - Burney Falls, Dusty, Lake Britton, Pit River, and Cassel.
