More than three dozen public campgrounds are located throughout the area, most of them on the water. You can enjoy water sports of almost every description, including fishing, water-skiing, and sailing. Boats, canoes, kayaks, sailboards, and personal watercraft are available for rent. Much of the northern and western portions of the Shasta-Trinity Area is covered by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, 3,280 square miles of public land. Outstanding features of the forest include the 513,000-acre Trinity Alps Wilderness, with its granite peaks, 55 lakes and streams, and many miles of trails. The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the forest in a north-south direction. From it, you can get fine views of Mount Shasta, Castle Crags, and the Trinity Alps. The South Fork National Recreation Trail begins at Forest Glen and climbs gradually along the South Fork of the Trinity River to Smokey Creek, and the Sisson-Callahan National Recreation Trail traces a historic route from the town of Sisson to the old mining town of Callahan. More than 105 miles of Wild and Scenic River have been designated in the forest, many of them along the Trinity. The Trinity Scenic Byway follows the course of the Trinity from the town of Shasta west to Blue Lake. The Trinity Heritage Scenic Byway follows along the west bank of Trinity Lake from Weaverville to the town of Mount Shasta, passing through historic towns and mountain landscapes. Campgrounds included in this eTrail are: Iron Canyon Reservoir Campgrounds, Clear Creek, Madrone, East Weaver, Rush Creek, Bridge Camp, Preacher Meadow, Goldfield, Big Flat, Trinity River, Eagle Creek, Horse Flat, Steelbridge, Douglas City, Junction City, Ripstein, Pigeon Point, Hobo Gulch, Big Flat, Skunk Point, Big Bar, Hayden Flat, Burnt Ranch, Denny, Big Slide, Slide Creek, Shiell Gulch, Philpot, Hell Gate, Scotts Flat, Forest Glen, Mad River, Ruth Lake Campgrounds, Deer Lick Springs, White Rock, Basin Gulch, Beegum Gorge, Tomhead Saddle, Reading Island, Lake Red
