The Mendocino area enjoys some of the most dramatic coastal scenery found anywhere. While much of it is private and inaccessible, much more is open to the public as marvelous state and county parks and public beaches. The towns in this area are as varied and scenic as the coast itself. The entire town of Mendocino, which was founded by New England whalers, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Inland, a major wine-producing region centers around Ukiah, which has 35 wineries within its city limits. To the east, the Mendocino National Forest offers a million acres of trails, rivers, streams, and lakes for outdoor enjoyment. Campgrounds included in this eTrail are: Standish - Hickey State Recreation Area, Sinkyone Wilderness State Park, Westport - Union Landing State Beach, Meckerricher State Park, Jackson Demonstration State Forest, Russian Gulch State Park, Van Damme State Park, Manchester State Beach, Eel River, Little Doe, Howard Meadows and Lake, Hammerhorn Lake, Plaskett Lakes Recreation Area, Trout Creek, Lake Pillsbury Recreation Area, Middle Creek, Deer Valley, Bear Creek, Lower Nye, Hendy Woods State Park, Navarro River Redwoods Staet Park, and Lake Mendocino.
