Sparsely populated but with a great natural endowment of beaches, forests, and fish-filled rivers and streams, the Redwood Empire attracts sports enthusiasts of all stripes. Overshadowing all are the huge and ancient coastal redwoods, which are preserved within Redwood National Park and almost a dozen state parks and groves. But the region also boasts many miles of sandy ocean beaches and hosts California’s Lost Coast, created when rugged terrain forced the builders of U.S. Highway 1 to turn inland. Humboldt Bay offers saltwater fishing for salmon, halibut, and perch, while inland lie two of the nation’s best salmon and steelhead rivers, the Smith and the Klamath. In the east, Six Rivers National Forest encompasses 1,500 miles of rivers and streams, including 366 miles of designated Wild and Scenic Rivers. These beckon anglers, rafters, kayakers, and swimmers. Hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers have 220 miles of trails and hundreds of miles of mining and logging roads to explore. Campgrounds included in this eTrail are: Clifford Kamph Memorial County Park, Ruby Van Devander County Park, Florence Keller County Park, Big Flat, Panther Flat, Grassy Flat, Patrick Creek, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Redwood National Park, Humboldt Lagoons State Park, Big Lagoon County Park, Patrick's Point State Park, Clam Beach County Park, Pearch Creek, E-Ne-Nuck, Fish Lake, Aikens Creek West, Tish Tang, Boise Creek, East Fork, Gray's Falls, Samoa Boat Launch County Park, Van Duzen County Park, Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Honeydew, A.W. Way County Park, King Range National Conservation Area, Benbow Lake State Recreation Area, and Richardson Grove State Park.
