This hike near Lower Lake Mary offers interesting geology, views, and a connection to the Arizona Trail. The ponderosa pine forest here is open and spacious, and views of Walnut Canyon are only a few steps to the east. At one point there is an outcrop of volcanic rock on the rim, and a massive boulder field cascading into the canyon. On the opposite wall of the canyon, the horizontal strata of the Kaibab limestone form white cliffs. The Kaibab limestone is the uppermost layer of sedimentary rock on the Coconino Plateau and forms both the south and north rims of the Grand Canyon. However, it is covered with lava flows in much of the Flagstaff area.
