An easily accessible day hike on the Flagstaff Urban Trail System, the Observatory Mesa Trail also provides access to the Coconino National Forest. Observatory Mesa is named for Lowell Observatory, which is located on its southeast rim. Percival Lowell established the observatory in 1894, just a few years after the settlement of Flagstaff. The combination of railroad access and the clear mountain air provided an ideal location for observing the stars and planets.
