Follow a short trail to a colorful, highly eroded volcanic mountain on the Coconino Plateau. It is easy to imagine a volcanic explosion creating this area, but the crumbly spires and hoodoos (natural rock formations of fantastic shape) are probably the result of water eroding the old cinder cone. The Coconino Plateau is the southernmost portion of the Colorado Plateau, and covers the region surrounding San Francisco Mountain, north of the Mogollon Rim and south of the Grand Canyon. Several hundred cinder cones and old volcanoes dot the area, ranging in elevation from 8,000 to 12,633 feet. The hikes in this section explore these old volcanic features.
