This is a short hike to a pleasing mountain stream in a conifer forest. The route provides a glimpse of the massive 2012 burn along its low-intensity eastern edge. Good campsites abound along Iron Creek. From a busy campground, this trip takes you to a mountain stream with ponderosa pine parks on one bank and a dark spruce and Douglas fir forest on the other. The 2012 Whitewater forest fire swept down from Turkeyfeather Mountain into the Iron Creek drainage. The lush creek bottom served as a natural firebreak, and the Iron Creek forest was largely spared. Most of the effect is in the lower drainage below Turkeyfeather Pass. Subsequent flooding in 2013 impacted the whole creek bottom; some trail-finding skills will be necessary for this hike. And travel will be slower than your usual pace.
