This adventurous hike begins in an accessible yet wild canyon with a perennial stream and a ?sh-able trout population. This is a good choice for those seeking a manageable wilderness challenge. Because of ?ood damage there are obstacles to work over and around. The 7-mile hike to Snow Lake starts at the Gilita forest camp in a lush spruce-fir forest next to a sparkling trout stream. Gilita Creek loses an average of 100 feet per mile over its 6-mile length to the upper Middle Fork Gila River. As it descends, the country becomes increasingly rough, rocky, and dry within a modest elevation difference of only 600 feet.
