This hike follows the crest of the Mogollon Mountains in the Gila highlands with expansive high-country vistas thanks to openings created by the Whitewater-Baldy Fire. A short side hike reaches the top of Whitewater Baldy, highest peak in the Gila Wilderness at 10,895 feet. The route descends through the 2012 burn for several miles ending at Willow Creek, in the upper Middle Fork drainage. This shuttle hike involves a very short car shuttle distance (8 miles). Another positive feature is that the Willow Creek campground is an attractive place for your pickup party to await your arrival after dropping you off at the Sandy Point trailhead.
