Wildly entertaining loop featuring steep and exposed sandstone with carved holds and large sand dunes. Red Rock Canyon is the western most canyon in the Red Rocks and is the only canyon west of the Park that is not fenced or inhabited. To reach the Canyon, turn north from the I-40 frontage road 5.3 miles east of First Street and Route 66 as if you are going to the refinery. After 0.3 miles turn left onto a gravel road and then after only 0.1 mile turn left again, just east of the open ponds onto a rutted dirt road called Southfork road. Head north and cross the arroyo (this section can be a nightmare in wet conditions). After crossing the arroyo, head east and then north to the mouth of the canyon. Route: Just about everything except a real trail: canyon bottom, slick rock with carved holds, game trail, dirt road and sand dunes. Views: Gorgeous vies of the Red Rocks.
