Red Creek is a tributary of the Verde River featuring a perennial stream and easy hiking. Since it’s outside the wilderness, you may encounter off-road vehicles on the weekends. During the week it’s a very pleasant hike. Walk down the steep, rough jeep road into Red Creek, then turn right to walk downstream. Although this non-wilderness canyon is sometimes used as a four-wheel-drive route to the Verde River, the route lies in the stream bed for much of the way, and tracks soon wash out. Except on busy weekends, it makes an enjoyable and easy hike, and the creek flows year-round. The canyon narrows and winds between reddish rock walls for about 0.7 mile. Here, a jeep road crosses the alluvial flat south of the creek—you can either walk the road across this pleasant flat or stay in the creekbed.
