This strenuous but rewarding trail and cross-country hike takes you to the top of seldom-climbed North Peak, the aptly-named northernmost summit of the Mazatzal Mountains. The trail starts up Mineral Creek by following an old, closed road, but in less than a mile the old road ends and the North Peak Trail turns south and starts a steep and sustained climb up chaparral-covered slopes. After passing Mineral Spring at 1.0 mile, the trail swings west again and climbs onto a ridge. At last the climb moderates as the trail turns southwest to follow the ridge. Gentle slopes give way to steeper ones as the trail crosses the northwest side of North Peak, which is covered with a mix of pinyon-juniper and ponderosa pine. Leave the trail here, 3 miles into the hike, and climb cross-country directly up the shallow ridge to the southeast, toward the summit.
