A classic route around the range’s highest peak and through a remarkable variety of terrain in the Mazatzal Wilderness; the trails are better maintained and easier to find than most of the trails in the wilderness. Start on the Barnhardt Trail, then, just a dozen yards from the trailhead, turn left on the Y Bar Trail (sometimes called the Shake Tree Trail). The Barnhardt Trail will be your return. The Y Bar Trail climbs up a broad ridge in a series of rocky switchbacks, heading generally southwest through pinyon pine and juniper forest. When the trail passes the wilderness boundary, it turns more to the south and climbs along the east slopes of Mazatzal Peak, crossing numerous small canyons.
