This loop hike in the Four Peaks foothills takes you along ridges with superb views; a good winter hike when the high country is snow-covered. From Cottonwood Camp, follow the Soldier Camp Trail east; it starts a gradual climb along a ridge. After a mile or so the grade steepens, and the trail ends at the Cane Spring Road at 2.1 miles. You can make this a much longer hike (a good overnight backpack) by continuing east on the Cane Spring Road at 2.1 miles. When the road veers off the ridge to the east, turn left onto the Soldier Camp Trail. The trail stays on the ridge south of Boulder Creek, climbing steadily to the northeast. Next, turn right on the Cane Spring Trail and follow this trail down to Cane Spring.
