This rugged cross-country backpack trip takes you into seldom-visited country in the northeastern Superstition Wilderness. You should have both the USGS maps and the wilderness map, as well as skill in cross-country routefinding, before attempting this hike. Hike cross-country up Pine Creek above the bridge. There is seasonal water along this low Sonoran Desert creek as you pass through groves of stately saguaro cactus. Pine cones washed down from the pinyon and ponderosa pine stands at the head of this long drainage hint at the variety to be found in the eastern Superstition Mountains. Where the Pinyon Mountain USGS topographic map shows the trail from Yellowjacket Spring crossing at 1.4 miles, take note of the slope to the east. This will be your return route.
