This exceptionally scenic cross-country hike starts from an easily accessible trailhead, and takes you into a narrow canyon with towering walls. Rounding a rock spur, the trail drops steeply into La Barge Creek. At 2.4 miles, this is a popular destination for both day hikes and overnight hikes, and there’s usually water in the creek during the cool half of the year. Follow the main trail across La Barge Creek, then upstream. When the trail turns right and climbs away from the creek at 2.9 miles, leave it and continue cross-country up the canyon. At first, the going is easy up the broad wash, but as you enter Lower La Barge Box the walls close in and travel becomes more difficult. At several places, you’ll have to scramble up and around huge boulders. The most impressive section of the canyon begins where there is a sharp left bend, followed by a sharp right bend. Here the walls seem to go straight up.
