A rugged trail and cross-country hike to the crest of Superstition Mountain featuring 100-mile views. As close as it is to the cities of the Valley of the Sun, the crest still has a wild, remote feel, especially as one contemplates the deep canyons, mesas, and peaks spread out to the east. Siphon Draw is the major canyon southeast of the state park. It’s marked by a distinctive rock formation south of the draw near the crest, appropriately named The Flatiron. The trail, an old road, wanders southeast across the desert foothills, at first climbing gradually toward the mouth of the canyon. You’ll pass the Discovery Trail just after leaving the trailhead, and the Prospector and Crosscut Trails at 0.4 mile. After passing the wilderness boundary at 1 mile, the gradient begins to steepen and the impressive canyon walls and towering rock formations begin to close in. You’ll also see fine examples of the stately saguaro cactus, the symbol of the Sonoran Desert, which grows up to 50 feet tall.
