Still known as the Old Pueblo, the city of Tucson is the cultural center of southeastern Arizona. This desert city is surrounded by bold mountains that rise dramatically from the beautiful Sonoran desert foothills to the craggy, forested summits. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, to the southwest, preserves a unique sample of the Sonoran desert containing the rare Organ Pipe cactus and many other unique plants and animals. Closer to the city, the Tucson Mountains contain Saguaro National Park West, which protects one of the largest stands of giant cactus in the world. The road ends near the 9,157-foot summit of Mount Lemmon, site of a summer home community and the southernmost alpine ski area in the United States Campgrounds are scattered along the Catalina Highway, as well as in the foothills. Backcountry hikers can spend days exploring the rugged Pusch Ridge and Rincon Wildernesses. The Catalinas are famous among rock climbers for the varied and challenging routes found here. Campgrounds included in this eTrail are: Coyote Howls Park, Twin Peaks, Picacho Peak State Park, Gilbert Ray, Catalina State Park, Peppersauce, Spencer Canyon, Rose Canyon, General Hitchcock, Prison Camp, Molino.
