This hike takes you into the Bandelier Wilderness to experience quite a different environment from the summer crowds and activity centering around Bandelier Park Headquarters. We found steep descents and ascents, rare wildflowers, and welcoming Frijoles Creek—all in all a great day hike! From the trailhead an old logging road takes you south through a forest of Gambel oak, ponderosa pine, and aspen. Among the wildflowers in bloom along the trail in July were beautiful bright red skyrocket penstamen. The trail quickly cuts through a meadow and gently ascends a ridge where you will find a sign for Apache Springs to the right (southwest).
