Although there is a substantial elevation gain on this hike, it is for the most part a pleasant, gentle trail along the canyon bottom, paralleling a small stream. We met a friendly hiking group from Los Alamos and two mountain bikers; however, the appearance of the trail indicated little use. The first portion of this hike is along a wide, rocky, seldom-used road lined with ponderosa pine, Gambel oak, and mixed conifers. You will begin a gradual ascent as the trail widens then narrows again. Several easy creek crossings and the lush riparian vegetation make this section of the hike, along the bottom of the canyon, pleasant, cool, and interesting.
