The Frey Trail, once called the Old North Trail, was used by all visitors to Bandelier until 1934, when the Civilian Conservation Corps built the present road. For ten years it was the only trail Mrs. Evelyn Frey (for whom the trail was named) and her husband used as access to their home and guest lodge in Frijoles Canyon. This hike provides an excellent opportunity to obtain an overview of Frijoles Canyon and Tyuonyi Ruin before setting out to explore them in depth. Descend to the canyon bottom on a well-worn trail through meadow, pin~on and juniper forest, and finally volcanic rock.
