This hike offers spectacular views from Hamilton Mesa of the principal peaks in the Pecos Wilderness. We found many early summer wildflowers throughout the hike, but the most impressive and abundant were the wild iris or Rocky Mountain flag. To begin this hike leave the campground through the iron gate; the well-worn trail heads east and gently climbs to the ridge above the Mora River. It doesn’t take long to discover that this is a trail well used by horses. At the top of the ridge there are several smaller trails leading to views of the Rio Mora Canyon to the right (east); however, to continue walk left (north) along the ridge until you reach a trail junction (about l mile from the trailhead) of Hamilton Mesa Trail 249 heading to the left (northwest) and Rociada Trail 250 heading to Mora Flats.
