If you’re up for a short but beautiful hike that ends at a neat little cliff dwelling, take a walk up Spring Canyon (a.k.a. Nogales Canyon) in Santa Fe National Forest. The trail follows the bottom of the canyon, where a creek and tall pines create a lush, shady setting. Then it’s straight up the side of the canyon to see a ruin known as the Nogales Cliff House. The dwelling, hidden behind the tall trees, sits high in an enclave that would require some pretty serious rock climbing to reach. From below, however, you get a good look at a tall, square tower and intact walls punctured by a doorway and a couple of little windows. The surrounding slopes contain forty or fifty additional rooms, none of which are very well preserved.
