Given the size of the Grand Canyon, its location in the Ancestral Pueblo region, and the fact that it contains more than 2,000 archaeological sites, one might expect to find an abundance of large cliff dwellings within Grand Canyon National Park. It may be somewhat disappointing, then, to learn that really big rock houses don’t exist within the park. There are, however, numerous granaries in the cliffs, including a remarkably well-preserved structure near the mouth of Nankoweap Creek. Nestled in an enclave 500 feet above the Colorado River, the ruin contains four perfectly intact rooms and the crumbling remains of a fifth. Each tiny room shares a wall with its neighbor, but there is no access from one chamber to another. The little doorways leading into the rooms still have wooden lintels at the top, an architectural feature that added enough structural stability to help keep the entrances intact for 900 years.
