As with the Perry Tank Canyon pueblo, the most interesting thing about the Squaw Creek ruin is not its crumbling old buildings but its fantastic display of petroglyphs. Like the other ruin, this place has a few odd ones. There are no ducks at this site, but you’ll find a lot of deer. What makes the animals so unusual is that a few of them are painted red. The paint is unusually well preserved, making the deer stand out well among the non-painted petroglyphs surrounding them. The practice of painting petroglyphs was actually not that uncommon in prehistoric times. Many petroglyphs in Waterfall Canyon in the White Tank Mountains, for example, were colored by the Hohokam. We just don’t see colored glyphs very often because the paint usually weathers away over the years, leaving images that today look like ordinary petroglyphs.
