If you live in Phoenix and want to hike to a cliff dwelling, the ruin in Roger’s Canyon in the Superstition Mountains is probably the closest one you’re going to find. It’s a pretty good one, too. You’ll encounter the 600-year-old dwelling after a long, dusty drive through classic Superstition scenery and a beautiful hike down the canyon. Most cliff dwellings are built inside rock enclaves, but this place sits inside a true cave. The most prominent structure inside the big cave is a small one-room adobe pueblo that looks more like it belongs in an old Mexican village than in a Salado cliff dwelling. Poke your head through the tiny doorway and you’ll see a ceiling made of wood and mud that still covers about three-quarters of the room. In front of the building, a perfectly preserved wall winds its way around a courtyard, acting as a sort of prehistoric picket fence to define the front yard.
