Once again the Verde Hohokam built their home in a lofty locale, this time atop a large hill near Horseshoe Lake called St. Clair Mountain. This pueblo features a large spread of foundation-like walls that form as many as twenty easily recognizable rooms, each liberally sprinkled with small pieces of pottery. The most well-preserved buildings stand at the very top of the hill. There, scraggly rock walls averaging about 3 feet in height form four well-defined rooms. No ceilings remain on any of the rooms, but in prehistoric times the occupants accessed the buildings by climbing through holes in the roofs and down ladders. Entry through the top rather than through the side may have provided better defense against invaders. Below the summit, most of the buildings have crumbled to mere rock piles, but many walls remain intact enough to show outlines of where rooms used to exist.
