Here’s a destination with three big attractions—some small cliff dwellings, an opportunity to view some interesting wildlife, and a chance to explore a beautiful stretch of the Verde River. The dwellings were built sometime between A.D. 1125 and 1300 along Towel Creek, a tributary of the Verde located a few miles downstream from the town of Camp Verde. Architecturally speaking, the ruins are simple. The Native Americans found some natural enclaves overlooking the creek and sealed off their entrances with walls of rock and mud.
