When you first see Black Mesa, a tall “mountain” just north of Black Canyon City, the idea of climbing to the top seems about as ambitious as climbing Squaw Peak in Phoenix without following the hiking trail. It’s a difficult trek, but the ruin at the summit has the best-preserved rooms and the tallest walls of any unreconstructed hilltop site in this book. The fort-like pueblo had thirteen rooms when it was built by the Hohokam sometime between A.D. 800 and 1150, according to Central Arizona Ecotone Project researchers who surveyed the site. When you visit the ruin, you’ll be pleased to find that nearly all the rooms remain basically intact. You’re sure to be awed by a great wall surrounding the site that in some areas reaches 12 feet in height.
