Archaeologists have recorded more than 4,000 petroglyphs in the Picachos. The drawings appear in clusters at nineteen different sites, with some of the most spectacular displays at the north end of the range, which is on the side of the highway opposite Picacho Peak. At the largest site, stick-man petroglyphs are everywhere. Many of these depict people with their legs apart and their hands raised in the air, and some depict people with hollow circles in the middle of their bodies. Simple pictures of deer and bighorn sheep also appear here and there, looking more like they were drawn by children than by adults. Other images include suns, circles, four-pointed stars, swastikas, grids, something that looks like a garden rake, and all kinds of squiggly lines that appear to follow no pattern at all.
