If you’ve never ventured into the desert to see a Hohokam “fortified hilltop” before, this pueblo near the New River would make a good introductory trip because it is so typical of hilltop ruins. Located at the summit of a rugged, steep-sloped mountain, the ruin has five or six easily recognizable rooms formed with ancient walls of stone. Most of the crumbling old walls only stand 1 or 2 feet high, but one particularly well-preserved room in the center of the pueblo has four chest-high walls that remain unbroken except for a clearly defined entrance. Researchers working on the Central Arizona Ecotone Project, which included surveys and excavations of many archaeological sites in the upper New River area, found that the ruin had a total of nine rooms when it was built sometime between A.D. 800 and 1150.
