Virtually all of this area consists of portions of the Sierra and Inyo National Forests, which are possibly the most scenic national forests in the nation. Rugged mountain peaks, crystal-clear streams, and pristine alpine lakes combine with a diverse forest to provide spectacular open vistas and wooded groves and glens. The forests are home to more than 315 animal species, including black bears, coyotes, bobcats, gray foxes, porcupines, mule deer, beavers, marmots, and pikas. Thirty-one species of fish include bass, crappie, bluegill, and four types of trout. At lower altitudes, the forests consist primarily of oak and chaparral. Between 4,000 and 8,000 feet, mixed conifers are predominantly ponderosa pine. Red fir forests begin at 6,000 feet and range up to 8,000 feet. Just below timberline, mixed pines (lodgepole and Western white) and hemlock take over the scene. In addition, fine groves of giant sequoia can be found at various locations in the Sierra National Forest, and ancient bristlecone pines can be seen in the Inyo. The forests contain hundreds of miles of trails, including the Kings River National Recreation Trail, the Mount Whitney Trail, and a 30-mile segment of the Pacific Crest Trail. Large, secluded alpine lakes, such as Florence, Cartwright, and Wishon, and numerous smaller ones, such as the Dinkey Lakes, glisten like jewels in their High Sierra setting. The Kings Wild and Scenic River challenges kayakers and rafters. The Sierra Heritage Scenic Byway (California 168) passes through a landscape of granite walls and domes, untrammeled wilderness areas, and majestic mountain vistas. These and other attractions can be enjoyed from the 51 public campgrounds described in this eTrail. Campgrounds included in this eTrail are: Dorabelle, Lower Billy Creek, Billy Creek, Catavee, Kinnikinnick, Deer Creek, College, Rancheria, Midge Creek, Badger Flat, Sample Meadow, West Kaiser, Portal Forebay, Bolsillo, Mono Hot Springs, Mono Creek, Vermillion, Ward Lake, Jacka
