To early Spanish settlers traveling along the Rio Grande north from El Paso, the dramatic sky-reaching granite spires of the Organ Mountains resembled massive organ pipes, hence the name. Certainly the range’s striking profile provides a scenic backdrop to the city of Las Cruces, and there are countless photos taken with a bayonet yucca’s gracile flower stalk in the foreground and the craggy peaks in the background. Visitors are rare in many areas in the range; the extreme ruggedness of the terrain discourages casual off-trail exploration. This, as well as off-limits military land, has prevented an extensive network of hiking trails in the Organ Mountains, and the existing trails hardly count as wilderness treks. The hikers who know the range best are rock climbers. The large and numerous high-angle faces and formations have a national reputation in the climbing community; indeed, many summits can be reached only by technical climbers. Existing trails offer several interesting day hikes; backpack trips generally are limited by the paucity of long-distance trails, difficulty of cross-country travel, and the range’s relatively small size. This trail guide covers an area with approximately 30 miles of trails.
