To people for whom wilderness is synonymous with natural grandeur—Yellowstone, the Colorado Rockies, Canyonlands—the West Malpais Wilderness will probably be a disappointment. Sure, the nearby El Malpais National Monument is spectacularly scenic. But the wilderness here is south of the great lava flows, the dramatic cinder cones, and the towering sandstone cliffs. When hiking here, you stumble over chunks of lava, a reminder that beneath these rolling grasslands and ponderosa-capped hummocks is a volcanic soul. But when you leave you’ll remember more than volcanism. You’ll appreciate the subtle natural forces of the inexorable weathering of even the hardest rocks, of wind filling swales and hollows with dust and sand, of grass colonizing and becoming dominant, and of ponderosa pines establishing outposts. Hiking here is severely limited by the forbidding nature of the volcanic terrain and the lack of trails. This trail guide covers an area with no maintained trails.
