The wind was raging and the air was dense and dark with dust the first time I camped at the Bisti—De-na-zin Wildernesses. My youngest daughter was three, and—undaunted by the storm—we explored the strange, barren hills. The swirling tempest reminded her of a scene from a movie we’d recently seen, The Neverending Story, in which the universe was about to be devoured by a formless chaos called The Nothingness. “We’re in the Nothingness,” she repeated. Not a bad image, actually, for the wilderness known as the Bisti (pronounced BIS-tie), a name derived from a Navajo word meaning “badlands.” A strange, otherworldly sort of place. Stone trunks of ancient trees protrude from the lifeless soil, calcite crystals glitter in the intense sun, and the land is contorted like an amoeba with weathered formations known as hoodoos and toadstools. It’s an easy place for a three-year-old to enter the realm of fantasy. Though the Bisti—De-na-zin Wilderness lacks marked or maintained trails, the terrain readily allows for cross-country travel. Hikers can follow ridges and drainages in their explorations. Lack of water limits overnight trips. This trail guide covers an area with no maintained trails.
