The Sandia Mountain Wilderness is indeed a study in contrasts and compromises. The north-south trending range, approximately 30 miles long and less than 10 miles wide, has wilderness designation at both ends, but its middle is bisected by the tram as well as a road. On the west, the wilderness boundary is less than one mile from dense housing developments within the city limits of Albuquerque. ' Many trails heading into the wilderness receive heavy use by day hikers, but because most hikers perceive the Sandias as their backyard and suitable only for day use, backpackers are infrequent. Campers do, however, enjoy considerable solitude. Because the mountains are so close to Albuquerque and are so heavily used, hunting with guns is not allowed, thus protecting a diverse array of wildlife. An extensive and well-maintained system of trails exists in the Sandia Mountain Wilderness. Most hikers go just for the day, but overnight trips are possible.
