I’ve always regarded these areas as a paradigm of New Mexico itself. Viewed from I-25, the land might appear nondescript, even drab. But when explored on foot, it reveals a world of unexpected beauty and wonder. These four areas are not all contiguous, but aside from general proximity they share the vegetation of the Upper Sonoran Life Zone—creosote bush, ocotillo, mesquite, desert grassland, and piñon-juniper woodland. They also share a landscape that erosion has shaped into arroyos, deep narrow canyons, broken badlands, and mesas, ridges, and low mountains. The areas just east of the Rio Grande are characterized by the Spanish term quebradas, meaning “breaks,” referring here to the eroded bench lands above the Rio Grande floodplain. At one time the land may have been more hospitable, as several archaeological sites indicate that people lived here. These include the remains of a Piro Indian pueblo, a rare prehistoric painted panel, and several petroglyph sites. Though these WSAs lack marked or maintained trails, the terrain allows for cross-country travel. Old roads and livestock trails, ridges, and drainages offer routes for exploration of the terrain as well. This trail guide covers an area with no maintained trails.
