This area is gentle and welcoming, lush with verdant marshes, tiny streams, and rolling meadows punctuated by aspen groves and conifer forests. All this velvety prose accurately describes the San Pedro Parks Wilderness, but to enjoy this pleasant area, one must first reach it. Park, in the geographic lexicon of the American West, refers to open grassland in a setting of mountains and forest, and that indeed describes the San Pedro Parks. But here the broad, high upland (average elevation 10,000 feet) with its distinctive and inviting vegas, “meadows,” is guarded on all sides by ramparts of varying steepness, for the wilderness sits atop the Sierra Nacimiento, an igneous uplift that abuts but is geologically different from the volcanic Jemez Mountains. An extensive network of well-marked and well-maintained trails exists throughout the San Pedro Parks Wilderness, with numerous trailheads around the wilderness’s periphery.
