Harquahala is derived from a Mohave Indian word meaning “always water,” but, although there are some springs and riparian areas in the Harquahala Wilderness, I would not stake my life on finding any potable water there. Lying just outside the wilderness boundary, the 5,691-foot summit of Harquahala Mountain provides a stunning panorama of desert and mountain terrain. The highest point in southwestern Arizona, the peak is the former site of an astronomy observatory erected and operated by the Smithsonian Institution between 1920 and 1925. Today, it is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. A distinctive feature of the Harquahala Wilderness is a screened interior canyon system in which relict ecosystems, such as chaparral and desert grassland, are preserved. This trail guide covers an area with 6 miles of trails.
