Located just south of the Four Peaks Wilderness, the Superstition Wilderness may be Arizona’s best known wilderness unit. Designated a Forest Reserve in 1908 and as the Superstition Primitive Area in 1939, its status was changed to wilderness designation by the 1964 Wilderness Act which set aside 124,000 acres. Already quite large at that size, the Superstition Wilderness became even bigger when the Arizona Wilderness Act of 1984 added 36,000 acres. The new acreage eliminated cherry-stem corridors and added picturesque boulder fields and peaks high enough to support the growth of conifers. This guide covers an area with over 180 miles of trails.
