Upgraded in 1994 from national monument status, two units of Saguaro National Park grace the eastern and western city limits of Tucson, Arizona. Created by congress in 1976, the 73,400-acre Saguaro Wilderness is divided between the eastern and western portions of the park, with the 13,470- acre western, or Tucson Mountain, portion (the subject of this section) being the smaller of the two. Heavily forested by quite possibly the most beautiful stand of giant saguaro cactus in the world, the Saguaro Wilderness is quintessential Sonoran Desert Uplands, rich in a variety of desert plants and abundant with wildlife. Desert arroyos in the wilderness are lined with mesquite, palo verde, desert hackberry, and other trees. Ocotillo, jojoba, and creosote bush are common, and prickly pear, barrel, and varieties of cholla are among cacti found here. This trail guide covers an area with 15 miles of trails.
