The miller peak wilderness, although small, is a gem of a place for hikers, backpackers, bird watchers, and nature lovers in general. The Chiricahua Apache Indian name for the mountain range in which the Miller Peak Wilderness is situated is Huachuca, meaning “thunder,” quite likely referring to the great volumes of thunder and lightning accompanying summer monsoon thunderstorms that annually sweep through southeastern Arizona during July and August. This proximity to Mexico brings to the wilderness area an astounding variety of wildlife. Seventyeight species of mammals, including coatimundi, mountain lion, black bear, ringtail, white-tailed and mule deer, javelina, and Mexican oppossum, have been found in the wilderness. New species of butterflies and moths are still being identified in some of the remote canyons; more than sixty species of reptiles have been found here; and the number of bird species identified exceeds 170, including fourteen species of hummingbirds and the Mexican spotted owl, a relative of the endangered Northern spotted owl. This trail guide covers an area with 44 miles of trails.
