The history of protection for the Sierra Ancha Wilderness goes back sixty-five years. Established as a 34,000- acre Primitive Area in 1933, the Sierra Ancha was reduced in size and renamed a Wild Area in 1951. In 1964 nearly 21,000 of its acres were set aside as wilderness. For a rather small wilderness area, the Sierra Ancha offers an impressive number of short hiking trails. The terrain protects a number of cliff dwellings erected between A.D. 1200 and 1300 by a paleo-Indian culture called the Salado. This trail guide covers an area with 57 miles of trails.
