Established in 1984, the Salt River Canyon Wilderness, a rare Sonoran Desert riparian zone, has it all: a beautiful steep-walled canyon containing thirty-two miles of wild river; spectacular geological formations ranging from the salt banks that give the river its name to black and white granite, sandstone, and quartzite; twenty-seven white-water rapids; numerous side creeks to explore; cliff dwellings; river otter and beaver; eagle, hawk, and osprey; and great botanical diversity. Although wilderness access is permitted via primitive four-wheel-drive roads at Gleason Flat and Horseshoe Bend, there are no developed hiking trails within the entire wilderness. River travel by raft or kayak during the short late winter to early spring river-running season is the only way to truly see the wilderness area. This trail guide covers an area with no maintained trails.
