Small, rugged, and waterless, the character of the Juniper Mesa Wilderness is just what its name implies: a broad, flat, juniper-clad mesa. Vegetation, which varies with exposure, tends toward piñon pine and Utah juniper on the southern slopes and alligator juniper and ponderosa pine on its north faces. Several varieties of oak also grow in the wilderness along with cliff rose, mountain mahogany, sotol, prickly pear, and agave. Black bear, deer, Abert’s squirrel, white-throated woodrat, deer mouse, coyote, and bobcat are among the mammals found in the wilderness. Birds include Gambel’s quail, mourning dove, Cooper’s hawk, curve-billed thrasher, roadrunner, Western kingbird, and great horned owl. The Juniper Mesa Trail is accessed via its junction with the Oaks and Willows Trail about two miles from the trailhead. From this point, the Juniper Mesa Trail takes off in an easterly direction along the rim of the mesa, affording the best views of the surrounding terrain.
