Named for a distinctive ridgeline that resembles a saddle, horn and all, the Saddle Mountain Wilderness lies along the eastern edge of the Kaibab Plateau. The main feature of its spectacularly rugged terrain is its central ridge, which falls off sharply to the south to form the sheer walls of the Nankoweap Rim. From trails within the wilderness, hikers are treated to magnificent views of the Grand Canyon, Marble Gorge, Cocks Comb, House Rock Valley, and the Vermilion Cliffs. Rocky and steep throughout, the Saddle Mountain Wilderness is bounded on three sides by deep, steep-walled canyons. The lower reaches of the wilderness are dominated by piƱon-juniper woodland, sagebrush, cliff rose, and a variety of grasses, such as blue grama, mutton grass, and squirreltail. As you gain elevation, you move through ponderosa pine, Gambel oak, aspen, and spruce-fir forest. This trail guide covers an area with 19.5 miles of trails.
