In its lower elevations the Paiute Wilderness, located in the Virgin Mountains about sixteen miles southwest of St. George, Utah, merges with the Beaver Dam Mountains Wilderness along the Virgin River Gorge. In addition to this river-gorge border, it shares with its sister wilderness the overlapping of two great desert biomes—the Mohave and Great Basin. The Paiute is more than four times the size of its sister wilderness, however, and, with a far greater elevation range, the Paiute is much more diverse in topography and biology. Sagebrush, creosote bush, banana yucca, Mormon tea, range ratany, barrel cactus, prickly pear cactus, and Joshua tree are the dominant plants in the lower portions of the Paiute Wilderness, named for the Southern Paiute Indians whose native ground includes the Arizona Strip region. This trail guide covers an area with 15.5 miles of trails.
