Part of the vast San Francisco Mountain volcanic field extending east and west of Flagstaff, the Kendrick Mountain Wilderness, although small, is a favorite among hikers. The heart of the wilderness is Kendrick Mountain, at 10,418 feet the second highest summit in northern Arizona. Three trails of varying degrees of difficulty lead to the top of the mountain. All offer panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic field, of the red rock country of Oak Creek and Sycamore canyons to the south, and of the cliffs of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, more than fifty miles north. All routes to Kendrick Peak travel through forested terrain. Gambel oak and ponderosa pine at the lower elevations give way to Douglas fir, white fir, Engelmann spruce, and aspen as you approach the summit. Small meadows along the way are lush with ferns and wildflowers in the spring and early summer. In the fall aspen groves within the wilderness and on the upper slopes of the nearby San Francisco Mountains become a palette of vivid yellow tinged here and there with red. This trail guide covers an area with 13.5 miles of trails.
